Martin Messier explores the relationship between sound and objects. He gives a voice to everyday objects, machines. The core of his performances and installations is the idea of developing the accepted ideas about ordinary objects by giving them new functions. In his choreographic works, he tries to reverse the hierarchy of relations between music and choreography, so that sound becomes the driving force of movement.
He graduated from musical composition at L’Université de Montréal. He is a laureate of many awards, incl. PrixArs Electronica 2010, Prix Opus 2012, Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton 2013 Awards from Canada Council for the Arts, OMOSIROI World Award in Japan (2018). Over the years, he has realized many projects, collaborating with other artists, incl. Nicolas Bernier, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage, Anne Thériault and Jacques Poulin-Denis. Recently, he has created the monumental outdoor project Innervision, the audiovisual performance Echo Chamber, the choreographic performance Con Sordina and the audiovisual performance Elusive Matter.
He lives and works in Montreal.
